The Defense Language Institute (DLI) is an internationally recognized leader in
the field of language and culture instruction. A part of the Army Training and Doctrine
Command (TRADOC), the Defense Language Institute provides language and culture training
across all branches of the military.
The Problem
United States armed forces currently face a shortage of translation and interpretation
capabilities in the critical languages of Dari, Farsi and Pashto. DLI needed a top
vendor to develop and pilot a translation and interpretation training program for
military linguists in Dari, Farsi and Pashto within a short timeframe.
Selection
LLE was awarded the contract due to LLE’s 30 year, proven history of service in
government. LLE immediately began designing curriculum and assembling a team of
experts to address DLI’s needs. Currently in the final stages of the project, the
LLE team brings the following strengths to this project:
- Curriculum design and development
- Interpretation and translation instruction
- Test design and development
- Military linguist instruction
The Result
LLE’s three week pilot curriculum familiarizes military linguists with the key competencies
necessary to provide translation and interpretation in the critical languages of
Dari, Farsi and Pashto. Students completing the course will be better able to:
- Define and describe the fundamentals of translation and interpretation
- Provide basic interpretation and translation services
- Expand their global language proficiencies
- Assist military counterparts in overcoming language barriers to successfully accomplish
their missions
LLE’s successful completion of this project will allow the Defense Language Institute
to provide better qualified and competent linguists to meet the demands of the U.S.
military.
