Message from the President's Desk

The world has changed since LLE's founding in 1979 and especially so in the world of Language Services, in which the rate of change has skyrocketed since the U.S. 'woke up' to the real need for understanding other languages in September 2001. Pundits say we have arrived at another "Sputnik Moment".
  • The ways in which we interact with other language speakers has broadened, resulting in LLE devoting great efforts to improving its telephone interpreting service, to offering on-demand email translations, and to undertaking web-site translations.
  • The range of languages we need to comprehend has also expanded hugely, so LLE has worked to increase its capabilities in some of the less commonly encountered languages such as Urdu, Hindi, Farsi, Arabic and Tagalog.
As the ease of global communication has increased, LLE has worked to make its services more easily available to the global citizen - testing, for example, is now largely completed remotely via email, the telephone or the Web.

We look forward to continuing to develop new ways in which to more effectively meet the needs of those who need understanding, and are confident that the flexibility, dedication to quality and high professional standards which have brought LLE so far over the last 27 years will serve us well into the future.

I am moved by an observation made by Sybille Bedford in her memoire, Quicksands: "To be monolingual is to have only one tramline to ride". At 94 and proficient in several languages her regret was not having studied Chinese so as to have insight into the clarity of oriental thought. I remain passionate about language and am proud to work with a team of professionals who feel the same way.

Excelsior!
